Happy New Year and welcome to our New Year’s day edition! I’m looking forward to the challenges and opportunities of 2013 even more so than in the recent past. 2012 was purportedly the end of the world and the year in which scientists told us they may or may not have found the Higgs boson particle – which is ironic because as quantum theory tells us ‘an object is only more likely to be there than not be there’. And so, here is my personal South Florida Top 5 list for 2012.
#1 For the first time in several years, South Florida hit a milestone, in 2012 job creation announcements began outpacing layoff notices.
#2 Thanks to the generosity of ITPalooza sponsors and attendees, the organizing committee was able to make several donations – the STEM Advisory Board received $3,000, while Big Brothers, Big Sister Miami and Broward received a total of $3,000. Toys for Tots received over $15,000 in toys and fun. More..
#3 We were thrilled to congratulate Alberto Carvalho, superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools and his team on winning the $550K Broad Prize for Urban Education and passage of the $1.2 billion bond issue . More..
#4 The inaugural meeting of the Cloud Security Alliance of South Florida was a big hit at the Oggi Caffe. More..
#5 Microsoft’s world-wide roll out of Windows 8 on October 25 should go down as a red-letter day in the South Florida technology calendar. Any time that radical new technology is released, it creates unimaginable opportunity for our industry.

Just for fun here is an interesting take on ‘Top 10 companies of 2012’ by Tanya Prive, contributor, Forbes Magazine |
2012 hosted many tech companies accomplishing impressive milestones. Being an entrepreneur who co-founded RockThePost, the crowdfunding platform for small businesses and entrepreneurs, I am deeply embedded in the tech scene. There were several companies that stood out and made headlines that I would like to highlight. Below is a list of the tech companies that, from my humble opinion, deserve to be in the “hall of fame” of 2012. The list is based on exits, valuations by A+++ investors and rapid growth. More.. |

FAU’s Andrew Duffell: Florida must encourage creativity, technology By Andrew Duffell |
More than in recent years, 2013 is a time for fresh starts. An historic presidential election is settled, the U.S. is slowly recovering from the Great Recession, and now we have to heal after the unspeakable events at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut. Florida should lead the way in making 2013 a year of progress and possibility. Comprehensively examining how we educate our youth, and investigate the unknown would be a good start, but only a start unless we also make the changes found to be necessary. If we can accomplish that task, it will help us lead in economic development as well, an area that has been much talked about but not well understood. More.. |
