Get Off of My Cloud
|
|
Cloud
services are not new. One of the earliest examples could be found in the X.25
Packet Switched Network. It was very popular in the early 80’s and widely used
by financial transaction systems such as Automated Teller Machines (ATMs)
Today’s cloud services are far more
ubiquitous and used in ways early pioneers could never have dreamed of. As
a result our everyday lives are interwoven with cloud services.
Join
me and other IT industry experts on May 22 @ WITI South Florida to learn
about the current state of cloud implementations.

Working PDP-11 for NSU’s Computer Museum
|
As
you already know I am always searching for historic computing devices.
Well last weekend I was able to pick up a working PDP11/73 machine with all of
the original orange manuals. I drove to the panhandle (9 hours each way)
to get it from Rick who was a high level government scientist.
The PDP-11/73 was the third generation of the
PDP-11 series of 16-bit minicomputers produced by Digital Equipment Corporation.
Introduced in 1983 with a clock speed of 15.2 MHz. It
has two RL02 hard disks with exchangeable platters. Each platter holds up
to 10 MB.
See the Arpanet image and how many PDP11’s were
being used!! More..

Only $3000 To Go For NSU’s Computer Museum, Cray
Supercomputer
|
As
computers and technology continue to evolve and impact every facet of modern
life, we have the unique opportunity and responsibility to preserve and catalog
the rich history of this rapidly changing industry, as a reminder of where we’ve
been and where we’re going. Last year, the Graduate School of Computer and
Information Sciences established a Computer
Museum.
Our goal is to have machines from various eras and
computing power. Recently I was made aware of an unbelievable opportunity to get a Cray T94 Supercomputer for $10,000. This
machine when new in 1995 was millions of dollars.
Seymour Cray was an electrical engineer and
supercomputer architect who designed the fastest computers in the world for
decades. He has been credited with creating the supercomputer industry. More..
