The line between freelancer and remote employee is blurring, and it’s hurting workers.

It’s no secret that freelancers are a huge asset to businesses. In fact, 78% of companies reported that they are inclined to fill staffing gaps with freelancers in 2023. At best, it’s a mutually beneficial relationship that has long existed in the workforce.

What freelancers are increasingly coming up against, however, are freelance job offers that bleed into employee territory. “I’m hearing on the grapevine that there is more and more of this happening,” says Lindy Alexander, a long-time freelance writer who provides coaching to other freelancers. “So many companies have conflated work-from-home freelancers with an employee that is working from home.”

“Freelancers can set boundaries by being proactive in defining their scope of work, rates, and availability from the outset of a project,” says Espinal, who also encourages freelancers to “renegotiate terms [of a contract] if they feel their time or expertise is undervalued.”

So what’s the problem with that? When businesses treat freelancers like employees, they are, intentionally or not, asking them to comply with the obligations of a salaried employee, while assuming the risks and uncertainties of being a freelancer. As companies look to meet the demand for remote work and cut costs, the freelancing community is likely to see more gigs advertised as freelance with all the makings of a full-time position.

If you search for freelance work online, you’ll often find job offers that read something to the effect of “Freelance position: 40 hours a week, must be available 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. EST, location freedom—work from wherever you want!” But what do these jobs inevitably lack? Full-time benefits (like health insurance or 401(k) matching) and workplace protections.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
The SAP ABAP Developer is responsible for gathering of SAP requirements and specifications, analyzing, designing, documenting, coding, testing, configuring, deploying, implementing, and maintaining systems and applications.
SAP ABAP DEVELOPER ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Participate and collaborate with the users, business analyst, and quality assurance/quality control analyst in the gathering of user requirements and specifications.
  • Analyze technical and business requirements and translate these into basic and detailed technical designs.
  • Participate and conduct a feasibility study, research and development, prototyping, and proof of concept (PoC) in implementing new/existing systems, solutions, and processes.
  • Participate in the technical and project documentation including but not limited to functional, system, and technical design, requirements, and specifications.
  • Develop, customize, enhance, fix, and maintain codes, applications, and systems.
  • Create test scenarios and data and conduct or participate in non-functional and functional testing (e.g., unit testing, system testing, integration testing, etc.).
  • Document, analyze, and report test results.
  • Develop and review codes, programs, and configurations to verify consistency and conformance with established programming and industry standards, guidelines, policies, and practices.
  • Conduct incident and problem analysis, data gathering, investigation, and resolution of issues, and provide technical consultancy, assistance, and support.
  • Deliver the required systems/applications/solutions on time and based on the agreed budget and specifications.
  • Identify, assess, and recommend opportunities for application and process improvement.
  • Prepare reports, manuals, and other documentation on the status, operation, and maintenance of software.
  • Provide regular and effective progress updates to the project manager/team lead/supervisor/immediate manager.

Responsible for the core activities associated with the development, operation, and maintenance of the IT Infrastructure including support for all infrastructure-related systems, including all Server, Network, Telecommunication, and client devices. This includes the implementation of new systems and upgrading of existing systems, project management, help desk ticket and problem ticket work/escalations, and enterprise-level security work. Must be able to keep up to date with IT advancements, and emerging technologies and possess the ability to articulate the value of technology to the business.

Responsibilities: Successfully manage and execute business and project plans, deliverables, policies, processes, and procedures

  • Install, and maintain network systems, hardware, software, and peripherals across the enterprise as required
  • Provide project-specific technical support to and management of vendors/suppliers/teammates
  • Prepare recommendation(s) and provide project management for the successful implementation of relevant technology, business process modifications, and/or enhancements
  • Maintain Data Center/Azure Operations by monitoring, measuring, and optimizing the performance of all network hardware, storage, software, telephony, cabling, and data communications connections ensuring maximum uptime
  • Perform network and system administration tasks as assigned
  • Identify, analyze, diagnose research, and resolve technical problems for individuals and groups in an efficient manner, recognizing the proper course of action to take, communicating and escalating severe issues as appropriate
  • Respond to help desk tickets, telephone calls, email,s and personnel requests for technical support ensuring timely feedback and closure
  • Communicate highly technical information to both technical and non-technical personnel
  • Develop and maintain network security, data integrity, and file system security processes and procedures
  • Perform knowledge transfers among team members by preparing and maintaining documentation for networks, systems, processes, procedures, written instructions, and solutions to problems
  • Collaborate with team members to identify and recommend the process, network, system, hardware, and software improvements and/or upgrades
  • Maintain knowledge of developments in relevant technologies and their use in the industry, making recommendations when appropriate
  • Manage incoming and outgoing asset inventory of hardware, software, and peripherals
  • Prepare computer systems for deployment including interviewing clients to identify special considerations and other settings
  • Install computer hardware, software, and peripherals as required
  • May be required to travel outside the State of Florida and the USA
  • The position may require rotation between facilities/offices in the local market as needed and may be required to travel internationally
  • Available to work after hours and on weekends as required

Requirements: The successful candidate will have the following:

  • Citrix Cloud/ NetScaler/ VDI administrative expertise
  • Proficient working knowledge of Microsoft and Linux operating systems and virtualization tools such as VMWare and Microsoft HyperV as well as desktop software such as Microsoft Office suite
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Azure cloud platform
  • Extensive working knowledge of Microsoft operating systems and desktop software such as the Microsoft Office suite
  • Knowledge of networking standards, protocols, security, troubleshooting, and performance tuning
  • Excellent communication and writing skills are vital, should be as comfortable with people as with systems and technology
  • Must be able to work well with others in a team as well as independently, collaboration skills are vital

Education and Experience

  • Ideal qualification – Bachelor’s Degree in computer related field
  • MCSE certification or equivalent certifications
  • Minimum 1 year of experience with PC hardware and software support, including troubleshooting, repair, and deployment
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a large technical environment supporting LANs, WANs, telephony, security, and related technologies

Travel: Occasional travel – domestically and internationally
