This past summer, the Children’s Trust, Miami-Dade County, Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the Foundation for New Education Initiatives, Career Source South Florida, Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, and JP Morgan and Chase collaborated with a single intent in mind: to provide a minimum of 1,522 paid summer internships for youth across the county. Summer 2018 marks the third year of the program’s operation, and it continues to grow and exceed expectations.

Superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Alberto M. Carvalho, with some of the students from the program.

This unique summer internship program provided parent, student and employer orientations across the county, online training for interns, training curriculum including weekly assignments, internship coaches, and an online interface called Miami.GetMyInterns.org, which was used to match interns with employers.

About TEDx Boca Raton

Our theme for this TEDxBocaRaton event is, “Innovation: Reinventing Yourself.”  Please notice that our theme logo is surrounded by an amorphous shape, which represents the idea that there isn’t necessarily a formula for “reinventing yourself.” We chose this theme because we’re fascinated by the way people and businesses reinvent themselves through innovation, and then somehow they do it again. Apple is likely the best-known example of a company that has reinvented itself. It started out as a computer company and then disrupted other various industries (e.g. music, cell phone, tablet) through innovation and reinvention. But this theme is not just limited to people and companies, it encompasses economies, industries, and even animals. To understand our theme requires putting a definition to the word “innovation.”
