Access vs. Identity: Centrify at ITP16

Access vs. Identity: Centrify at ITP16

In a week where Centrify signed as ITPalooza Keynote sponsor, I thought it would be interesting to take a looks at personal security on the web.

If like me, you deal with hundreds of websites every week, you’ll sure be familiar with the “Lost password” routine. That’s where you can’t remember the password (or user name) for one of the many accounts your are managing.

When this happens, you’ll need to enter the email address associated with the account and wait patiently for a password reset link to be emailed to your account.

There are tools on the market to make managing multiple accounts somewhat easier, for example, your browser can remember them, but this is only useful if you don’t change machines.

A better solution is to use a password manager, this will allow you to store your user names and passwords in the cloud and give you access via any device. All you need to do is remember the master password.

Roll on Web 3.0

But what about simpler, more convenient solutions?

My laptop and smart phone both have cameras, why not make facial recognition the default access method for website accounts?

Speaking of smart phone, I’m never without mine – why not use proximity recognition? It’s my phone. I’ve signed into whatever app manages my access and NFC can manage the rest.

Is App adoption killing your product?

All across the world corporations and entrepreneurs are developing – and in many cases relaying upon – mobile app technology for users to experience their product.

This seems like a perfectly normal adaptation of a modern paradigm, except there seems to be a problem.

Steve Anderson and Josh Holtz, co-founders of Milwaukee-based software startup Snapifeye, encountered this issue with app-based event technology when they started developing the Snapifeye app in 2013.

“We learned that people are really reluctant to download new apps, especially if they will only use it temporarily,” Anderson said.

App-based event technology may yet make an appearance at ITPalooza, where we hope uptake will be brisk brisk.
