If you were one of the millions around the world who paid attention to the Academy Awards last evening, you’ll have noticed that the movie Mad Max: Fury Road garnered 6 Oscars. George Miller’s post-apocalyptic action film nearly swept all the below-the-line categories, including Best Costume Design, Production Design, Makeup & Hairstyling, Film Editing, and both Sound Mixing and Editing.

Fortunately for South Florida our tech scene is a lot more balanced. There’s no one single event or company sucking all the air out of the environment. That may be due in part to the huge diversity of our tech community. You only have to look around at the number of tech events taking place in our region to see what I mean.

And in South Florida we’re not known to ignore our neighbors to the south, take as an example next week’s Hey Cuba Hackathon that will be held at the Florida Vocational Institute, March 11 to 13.

More premier events taking place this month include:

Top 10 Reasons to Attend the 10th Annual State of the CIO – Mar 16

SFTA: Cracking the Code on Tech Talent in South Florida – Mar 24

I’ts been bubbling below the surface for quite some time and now it’s finally here. If you recall my article of Dec 28, I listed 5 tech trends to watch out for in 2016. The trend I’m referring to is Cybersecurity going mainstream. In case you missed it Mark Zuckerberg went on the record today to support Apple in its fight with the U.S. government.

But is this really a fight between technology and the government or is it a struggle to understand how to deal with new technologies in the face of terrorist threats and privacy issues.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey tweeted simply: “We stand with @tim_cook and Apple (and thank him for his leadership)!”

It’s clear that all of Silicone Valley is against the idea of building ‘back-doors’ into devices which could allow law enforcement services to access them in extreme cases. And for good reason, if the government has the keys, it’s only a matter of time before the bad guys get their hands on them.
